Grooming Your Pet Degu
Degus are meticulous self-groomers and, for the most part, take excellent care of their own coats. However, they require one very specific and essential grooming aid from their owners: a dust bath. [1]
The Importance of Dust Baths
Like their chinchilla relatives, degus should never be bathed in water. Water can strip their fur of natural oils and, because their coats are so dense, it can be difficult to dry them completely, putting them at risk of chilling or skin infections.
Instead, degus roll vigorously in fine dust or sand to remove excess oils, dirt, and moisture from their fur. This natural behavior is crucial for maintaining a healthy, clean coat. [2]
Providing a Dust Bath
- The Right Material: Use chinchilla-specific bathing sand. It is important to use sand, not dust, as the fine dust particles can contribute to respiratory issues in degus. [3]
- The Container: A heavy ceramic bowl or a dedicated bath house that is large enough for them to roll around in works well.
- Frequency: Offer the sand bath for about 20-30 minutes, 2-3 times per week. It is not recommended to leave the bath in their cage permanently, as they may start to use it as a toilet, and overuse can dry out their skin. [4]
Brushing and Nail Trims
- Brushing: Most degus do not require regular brushing. They and their cage-mates will typically groom each other, a social behavior known as allogrooming. If you notice a small tangle, you can try to gently work it out with your fingers.
- Nail Trims: A well-structured cage with plenty of wooden ledges, branches, and pumice stones will naturally help to wear down a degu's nails. If their nails do become overgrown, they can be carefully trimmed with small animal nail clippers. If you are not comfortable doing this, a veterinarian can perform the trim.
By providing regular access to a sand bath and a well-enriched environment, you give your degus all the tools they need to keep themselves clean and well-groomed.
