Proper Handling of Pet Hedgehogs

Handling a pet hedgehog can be intimidating at first. Their sharp quills are a formidable defense, but with patience and the right technique, you can build a strong bond with your spiky friend. The key is to teach your hedgehog to trust you and to handle them with confidence.

Getting Past the Quills

A scared hedgehog will roll into a tight, prickly ball. The goal is to encourage them to uncurl and relax in your hands.

  1. Scent is Everything: Hedgehogs have poor eyesight and rely heavily on their sense of smell. Let them get used to your unique scent by placing a worn t-shirt in their sleeping area. [1]
  2. The Scoop: Never approach your hedgehog from above, as this mimics a predator. Instead, slide your hands under them from the sides and scoop them up. Use both hands to create a secure platform. [2]
  3. Be Confident: If you are hesitant or jerky in your movements, your hedgehog will sense your fear and be more likely to stay balled up. A confident, smooth scoop is the best approach. [3]

Taming and Bonding

Daily handling is the most important part of the taming process.

  • Start Small: Begin by simply holding your hedgehog for short periods. Let them sit in your lap (with a towel or blanket) while you watch TV or read. This gets them used to your presence and scent in a low-pressure way.
  • The Snuggle Sack: A fleece snuggle sack or bonding pouch is an excellent tool. You can scoop your hedgehog up in the sack, where they feel secure, and let them sit with you. [4]
  • Patience is Key: Every hedgehog is different. Some will become comfortable with handling quickly, while others may take weeks or months. Be patient and consistent, and never force an interaction.

A Note on Gloves: While it may be tempting to use gloves, it is generally not recommended. Gloves prevent your hedgehog from learning your scent, which is the foundation of your bond. A thin fleece blanket can be used if you are very nervous, but bare hands are best. [5]

With gentle, daily interaction, your hedgehog will learn that you are not a threat and will begin to associate you with warmth and safety, making handling a positive experience for both of you.
