Is a Hedgehog Right for Me and My Family?

Hedgehogs are unique, fascinating animals with big personalities packed into a small, spiny package. They are not cuddly in the traditional sense — most hedgehogs take time to warm up to handling, and some remain prickly (literally and figuratively) throughout their lives. But for a patient, attentive owner, a hedgehog can become a surprisingly affectionate companion.
The Basics
Hedgehogs typically live 4 to 8 years with good care. They are solitary animals and should be housed alone — two hedgehogs housed together will fight. They are primarily nocturnal, becoming active in the evening and overnight.
One of the most critical things to know about hedgehogs: they are temperature-sensitive in a way that can be life-threatening. If the ambient temperature drops below approximately 65°F (18°C), a hedgehog may attempt to hibernate — but unlike wild hedgehogs, domestic African pygmy hedgehogs are not physiologically equipped for true hibernation. A hibernation attempt in a domestic hedgehog is a medical emergency that can be fatal. A warm, stable environment is non-negotiable.
What They Need Every Day
- A minimum 2×4 foot enclosure — wire cages with solid floors or large plastic tubs work well
- Temperature maintained at 70–85°F at all times — a ceramic heat emitter or space heater may be needed in cooler months
- A solid-surface wheel at least 12 inches in diameter — mesh wheels cause foot and toe injuries
- Daily handling to maintain tameness — hedgehogs that are not regularly handled become defensive and difficult to work with
- A quality insectivore diet — hedgehog-specific kibble supplemented with live insects (mealworms, crickets)
- Spot cleaning daily and a full cage clean weekly
The Cost of Hedgehog Ownership
| Category | Estimated Cost |
|---|---|
| Startup (enclosure, wheel, heating, supplies, adoption fee) | $284–$634 |
| Monthly ongoing (food, bedding, insects) | $50–$100/month |
| Veterinary care | Exotic vet required; Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome and tumors are common |
Hedgehogs require an exotic vet. Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS) — a progressive neurological disease — affects a significant portion of hedgehogs and has no cure. Tumors are also common. Budget for veterinary care and consider pet insurance.
Think Twice If...
- You cannot maintain a consistently warm environment. If your home gets cold at night or in winter, you will need supplemental heating specifically for your hedgehog's enclosure. This is not optional.
- You want a pet that is immediately friendly and easy to handle. Hedgehogs require patient, consistent handling over weeks or months before most become comfortable. Some never fully relax.
- You have very young children. Hedgehog quills are sharp and can startle or hurt small children. They are better suited to older children and adults.
- You live in a state where hedgehogs are illegal. Hedgehogs are prohibited in several US states including California, Georgia, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. Always check your local laws before adopting.
Great Match If...
- You want a unique, low-odor pet with a fascinating personality
- You can provide and maintain a warm, stable environment
- You are a patient, gentle handler who enjoys the process of earning an animal's trust
- You are comfortable with a pet that is primarily active at night and appreciates observation as much as interaction
A Note on Hedgehog Handling
The key to a tame hedgehog is consistent, calm daily handling — ideally starting when the hedgehog is young. When a hedgehog feels threatened, it curls into a tight ball and presents its quills. With time and patience, most hedgehogs learn to uncurl and explore their owner's hands and lap. The process requires respect for the animal's pace and boundaries.
