Hedgehog Habitat

Creating a safe, warm, and stimulating habitat is the most important part of hedgehog ownership. Their enclosure is their entire world, and it must be set up to meet their unique needs, especially their critical requirement for a stable, warm temperature.

Enclosure

Hedgehogs need a spacious, secure, and well-ventilated enclosure with smooth, solid walls.

  • Size: A minimum of 4 square feet of floor space is recommended, but 6-8 square feet is much better. Bigger is always better.
  • Type:
    • DIY Bin Cages: A large (105+ quart) storage bin is a popular and inexpensive option.
    • Commercial Cages: Cages designed for guinea pigs or rabbits can work, but the wire sides must be lined with corrugated plastic (Coroplast) to prevent climbing and falling.
  • Avoid: NEVER use multi-level cages or wire-bottom cages. Hedgehogs are terrestrial and poor climbers; a fall can be fatal. Wire floors will cause serious foot injuries.

Heating: This is Not Optional

This is the most critical component of your hedgehog's habitat.

  • Temperature: The ambient temperature in the cage must be maintained between 72-80°F (22-27°C) 24/7.
  • Heat Source: You will need a Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) with a dome lamp. CHEs produce heat but no light, making them perfect for nocturnal animals. Heat pads are not sufficient as they only heat the floor.
  • Thermostat: The CHE must be connected to a thermostat. This will automatically turn the heat source on and off to maintain a stable temperature.
  • Thermometer: You need at least one, preferably two, digital thermometers inside the cage to monitor the temperature accurately.
  • Hibernation Risk: If a hedgehog gets too cold, it will attempt to hibernate. For African Pygmy Hedgehogs, this is often fatal. Maintaining a warm, stable temperature is a matter of life and death.

Bedding

  • Recommended: Fleece liners are the most popular and safest option. They are soft, reusable, and won't cause impactions.
  • Acceptable: Paper-based bedding can also be used.
  • Avoid: NEVER use cedar or pine shavings (toxic oils). Avoid any bedding that could be ingested or get wrapped around their legs.

Enrichment

  • Wheel: A solid-surface wheel is absolutely essential. Hedgehogs run for miles every night. The wheel should be 10.5-12 inches in diameter.
  • Hides: Provide a snug, dark place for your hedgehog to sleep during the day, like an igloo or a fleece sleep sack.
  • Toys: Offer small cat balls, crinkle balls, and foraging toys to keep them stimulated.
Important: This is not a substitute for veterinary care.
