Essential Supplies for Pet Hamsters

Preparing for a new hamster involves creating an environment that caters to their natural instincts to burrow, forage, and run. Having all the necessary supplies ready before your new pet comes home will ensure a smooth and stress-free transition for both of you.

This checklist outlines the fundamental items every hamster owner needs.

The Hamster Shopping Checklist

CategoryItemKey Considerations
HousingEnclosureA large, deep enclosure is non-negotiable. A 40-gallon breeder tank or a large bin cage (at least 75 quarts) provides ample space. Avoid small, modular plastic cages. [1]
Bedding/SubstratePaper-based bedding, aspen shavings, or kiln-dried pine are safe options. Provide a very deep layer—at least 6-10 inches—to allow for proper burrowing. [2]
Food & WaterPrimary DietA high-quality, pelleted hamster food mix provides balanced nutrition. Look for a mix with a variety of seeds, grains, and proteins. [3]
Water BottleA gravity-fed water bottle with a metal sipper is essential. Check it daily to ensure it is dispensing water correctly.
Food BowlA small, heavy ceramic bowl is best, as it is chew-proof and won’t be easily knocked over.
EnrichmentExercise WheelThis is a critical item. Choose a solid-surface wheel (no wire or mesh) to prevent foot injuries. The minimum size is 8 inches for dwarf hamsters and 11 inches for Syrian hamsters. [4]
Sand BathA sand bath is essential for hamsters to clean their fur. Provide a shallow dish of chinchilla sand (not dust). [2]
HideoutsMultiple hiding spots are necessary for a hamster to feel secure. Ceramic, wooden, or cardboard hides are all great options.
Chew ToysHamsters' teeth grow continuously and they need safe items to gnaw on. Apple wood sticks, Whimzees dog chews (in small amounts), and other rodent-safe wooden toys are excellent. [5]
Foraging ToysScatter feeding or using puzzle toys encourages natural foraging behavior and provides mental stimulation.
Health & SafetyTravel CarrierA small, secure carrier is needed for safe transportation to the vet.
Cage CleanerA simple solution of 50/50 white vinegar and water is a safe and effective cleaner for the enclosure.
