Essential Supplies for Pet Ferrets

Ferrets are playful, curious, and mischievous carnivores that require a specific setup to keep them safe and entertained. Their intelligence and Houdini-like escape skills mean that their environment must be secure and stimulating. This checklist covers all the essential items you'll need to welcome your new ferret (or "business" of ferrets) home.

The Ferret Shopping Checklist

CategoryItemKey Considerations
HousingCageA multi-level, powder-coated wire cage with a secure latch is a must. The Ferret Nation or Critter Nation models are industry standards. Bar spacing should be no more than 1" x 2". [1]
BeddingSoft, washable bedding is best. Old t-shirts, towels, and fleece blankets are perfect. Avoid loose bedding like wood shavings, which can cause respiratory issues. [2]
Hammocks & Sleep SacksFerrets love to sleep in enclosed, hanging spaces. Provide a variety of hammocks, sleep sacks, and cubes for them to snuggle in.
Food & WaterFoodA high-quality ferret kibble with high protein (30-40%), high fat (18-30%), and low fiber is essential. The first ingredient should be a meat source like chicken or lamb. [3]
Water & Food BowlsHeavy, ceramic, tip-proof bowls or bowls that lock onto the cage are necessary to prevent spills. A sipper bottle can be offered in addition to a bowl, but a bowl is more natural for them.
EnrichmentLitter BoxA high-backed corner litter box is ideal. Use a paper-based pellet litter like Yesterday's News. Avoid clay or clumping cat litter, which can be harmful if ingested. [4]
ToysSturdy, hard plastic cat toys, jingle balls, and crinkle toys are great. Tunnels and tubes are a ferret favorite for stimulating their natural burrowing instincts. Avoid soft rubber or latex toys that can be easily chewed and ingested.
Ferret-Proofing SuppliesYou will need to secure any room your ferret has access to. This includes outlet covers, cabinet locks, and ways to block off small spaces under furniture or appliances.
Health & SafetyTravel CarrierA secure, hard-sided plastic carrier is needed for safe transport to the vet.
Grooming SuppliesFerret-safe shampoo for occasional baths, nail clippers, and a soft brush.
