Proper Handling of Pet Gerbils
Gerbils are among the most naturally curious and tame of all small pets, and with gentle, consistent handling, they can become very comfortable with their owners. However, there is one critical rule that every gerbil owner must know.
The Most Important Rule: Never Grab the Tail
Like degus, gerbils have a natural defense mechanism called "tail slip." If a predator grabs them by the tail, the skin will detach, allowing the gerbil to escape. This is a painful injury, and the exposed tail bone will need to be amputated by a veterinarian. [1]
Never pick up or restrain a gerbil by its tail.
Building Trust
Gerbils are naturally inquisitive and will often approach you on their own terms. The best approach is to let them come to you.
- Start with Treats: Place your hand flat in their cage and offer a small treat. Let them approach and take it from your palm. This teaches them that your hand is a positive thing.
- Let Them Explore: Once they are comfortable taking treats, let them climb onto your hand and explore. They are naturally curious and will often do this on their own.
- The Scoop: When you are ready to pick them up, gently cup your hands around them from the sides and lift. [2]
The Correct Way to Hold a Gerbil
- The Cup: Hold your gerbil in a loose cup formed by both hands, close to your body or over a flat surface. This gives them a secure platform to stand on and prevents them from falling.
- Stay Low: Always hold your gerbil low to the ground or over a soft surface. Gerbils are fast and curious and may jump. [3]
Gerbils are social animals and enjoy interaction. With regular, gentle handling, they will quickly learn to trust you and may even seek out your attention on their own.
