Essential Supplies for Pet Chinchillas

Chinchillas are unique pets with specific needs related to their sensitive digestive systems, dense fur, and energetic nature. Preparing their home with all the necessary supplies before they arrive is crucial for their health and well-being. This checklist will guide you through everything you need to get started.

The Chinchilla Shopping Checklist

CategoryItemKey Considerations
HousingCageA multi-level wire cage with a solid floor is essential. Look for a tall cage to accommodate their love of jumping and climbing. Bar spacing should be no more than 1" x 0.5". The Ferret Nation or Critter Nation cages are highly recommended. [1]
BeddingKiln-dried pine or aspen shavings are safe choices for the bottom of the cage. If using fleece liners for solid shelves, ensure they are changed frequently.
Food & WaterHayUnlimited, high-quality timothy hay or orchard grass is the most important part of their diet. It should be available 24/7. [2]
PelletsA high-quality, plain, alfalfa-based or timothy-based pellet formulated for chinchillas. Avoid mixes with seeds, nuts, or fruit. [3]
Water BottleA large glass water bottle is a necessity, as chinchillas will chew through plastic.
Food Bowl & Hay RackA heavy ceramic food bowl that can't be tipped over and a hay rack to keep hay clean and off the cage floor.
EnrichmentExercise WheelA large, solid-surface wheel is a must. A 15-inch wheel (like the Chin Spin or Silver Surfer) is the recommended size to prevent back problems. [4]
Dust BathChinchillas must have regular dust baths to keep their fur clean and healthy. Provide a dedicated bath house and chinchilla-specific dusting powder (not sand). [5]
Ledges & PlatformsWooden ledges and platforms should be installed throughout the cage to provide climbing opportunities and resting spots.
Chew ToysA constant supply of safe chew toys is critical for their dental health. Apple wood sticks, pumice stones (ledges), and various safe wooden blocks are excellent.
HideoutsProvide at least one wooden or fleece hideout per chinchilla for them to feel secure.
Health & SafetyAir ConditioningThis is non-negotiable. Chinchillas cannot tolerate temperatures above 75°F (24°C) and are extremely prone to fatal heatstroke. [6]
Travel CarrierA small, secure carrier for safe transport to the veterinarian.
