Sexing Your Pet Rabbit
Correctly identifying the sex of your rabbit is a fundamental part of responsible ownership. It is essential for preventing unplanned pregnancies, which can happen as early as 12 weeks of age, and for understanding their behavior. [1]
Sexing a rabbit involves gently examining their genital area to identify key differences between males (bucks) and females (does).
How to Sex a Rabbit
To safely check your rabbit, hold them securely on their back with their head slightly elevated, or have them sit on a flat surface while you gently lift their tail. You will need to part the fur around their genital area to get a clear view.
Apply gentle pressure on either side of the genital opening. This will help to evert the organs, making them easier to identify. [2]
-
Males (Bucks): The male's opening is circular, like a small donut. When you apply pressure, a tube-like penis will protrude. The distance between the anus and the genital opening is also greater in males. In adult bucks, two elongated scrotal sacs are usually visible on either side of the penis, but they can retract their testicles, so this is not always a reliable indicator. [3]
-
Females (Does): The female's opening is more of a slit or a V-shape (the vulva). When you apply pressure, the opening will elongate, but nothing will protrude. The distance between the anus and the vulva is much shorter than in males. [4]
| Feature | Male (Buck) | Female (Doe) |
|---|---|---|
| Genital Shape | Round, circular opening | Slit or V-shaped opening |
| Anogenital Distance | Longer | Shorter |
| Protrusion | Penis protrudes with pressure | No protrusion |
| Testicles | Usually visible in adults | Absent |

Tips for Accurate Sexing
- Age Matters: It is much easier to sex a rabbit once they are a few weeks old, as the features become more distinct. Sexing newborn kits is very difficult and best left to experts.
- Compare and Contrast: If you have a litter or a pair, comparing them side-by-side makes the differences in shape and distance much more obvious.
- Seek Help: If you are at all unsure, do not guess. A veterinarian or a knowledgeable rabbit rescue volunteer can confirm the sex for you with certainty.
