Dangerous Treats and Toys for Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are insectivores with specific dietary needs, and their unique anatomy makes them prone to certain injuries from improper toys and accessories. Providing a safe environment and a correct diet is crucial for their health. Many items that are safe for other small pets can be dangerous for a hedgehog.

Dangerous Treats

A hedgehog's diet should be primarily a high-quality, formulated hedgehog or cat kibble, supplemented with insects. Many other foods are difficult for them to digest or are outright toxic.

Absolutely to Avoid:

  • Nuts and Hard Seeds: Hedgehogs do not have the correct tooth structure for grinding hard items. Trying to eat hard nuts or seeds can lead to tooth fractures. They are also a major choking hazard and can get stuck to the roof of the mouth.
  • Dairy Products: Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant. Milk, cheese, and other dairy products will cause diarrhea and digestive upset.
  • Grapes and Raisins: These are known to be toxic to the kidneys of many animals and should be avoided entirely.
  • Avocado: The skin and pit are toxic, and the fruit itself is too high in fat.
  • Onions, Garlic, and Chives: These are toxic and can cause blood abnormalities.
  • Processed Human Foods: Anything high in sugar, salt, or fat (like candy, chips, or fried food) is dangerous.

Dangerous Toys and Accessories

Enrichment is important for hedgehogs, but their safety must come first.

  1. Wire-Bottom Cages and Wire Wheels: This is a major hazard. A hedgehog's small feet and toenails can easily slip through the gaps in a wire floor or wheel, leading to broken legs, torn toenails, and other severe injuries. All surfaces a hedgehog walks on must be solid.

  2. Wheels with Seams or Gaps: Even on a solid-surface wheel, a seam down the middle or small gaps can catch a toenail and cause a serious injury. The best wheels are made from a single, solid piece of plastic.

  3. "Fluffy" Bedding: Cotton-like nesting material is dangerous. The long fibers can get wrapped around a hedgehog's legs or toes, cutting off circulation.

  4. Cedar Shavings: Cedarwood is toxic to small animals. The aromatic oils it releases cause respiratory damage. Use paper-based bedding, aspen shavings, or fleece liners instead.

  5. Small, Ingestible Toys: Avoid any small toys with parts that could be chewed off and swallowed, as this could cause an intestinal blockage.

  6. Rubber Toys: Hedgehogs can chew off and swallow pieces of rubber, which can cause a fatal blockage.

What are safe toys and accessories?

  • A Large, Solid-Surface Wheel: This is the most important accessory for a hedgehog. It must be large enough (10.5-12 inches) for them to run with a straight back and have a solid, seamless running surface.
  • PVC Pipes and Tunnels: Large PVC pipes make excellent, easy-to-clean tunnels for hedgehogs to explore.
  • Fabric Pouches and Snuggle Sacks: Fleece pouches provide a secure and cozy place for a hedgehog to sleep.
  • Lightweight Balls: Small plastic cat balls with bells inside can be a fun toy for them to push around.

By being diligent about their diet and choosing only solid-surface accessories, you can create a safe and enriching environment for your hedgehog.
