Dangerous Treats and Toys for Degus
Degus have a unique and strict dietary requirement: they are completely intolerant of sugar. This, combined with their need to constantly chew, makes it absolutely critical for owners to understand which treats and toys are safe and which are dangerously inappropriate. Many items marketed for small animals are not safe for degus.
The Golden Rule: NO SUGAR
Unlike many other rodents, degus cannot process dietary sugars. Feeding them sugar leads directly to the development of diabetes, which in turn causes cataracts and blindness, among other health issues. This is not a suggestion; it is an absolute rule for their health and well-being.
Absolutely to Avoid:
- All Fruits: Raisins, apples, bananas, etc., are all high in sugar and must never be fed to a degu.
- Sugary Vegetables: Vegetables high in sugar, such as carrots, corn, and sweet potatoes, should be avoided.
- Commercial "Yogurt Drops" and Honey Sticks: These products are poison to a degu. They are made almost entirely of sugar and are a direct cause of diabetes.
- Anything Containing Molasses or Honey: Many commercial treat mixes, especially seed sticks, use molasses or honey as a binder. Read all labels carefully and avoid these products.
- Nuts and Seeds (in excess): While not sugary, nuts and seeds are very high in fat. A degu's diet should be low in fat. A single sunflower or pumpkin seed as a rare treat is acceptable, but they should not be a regular part of the diet.
| Unsafe Treat Category | Why It's Dangerous |
|---|---|
| All Fruits | High sugar content; directly causes diabetes. |
| Sugary Vegetables | High sugar content; risk of diabetes. |
| Yogurt Drops/Honey Sticks | Pure sugar; guaranteed to cause health problems. |
| Nuts & Seeds (Excess) | Too high in fat; unhealthy for their system. |
Dangerous Toys and Chews
Degus are avid chewers, and providing safe outlets for this behavior is essential for their dental health. However, the wrong materials can be deadly.
-
Plastic Toys and Cage Accessories: Degus will chew and ingest plastic. This is extremely dangerous as it can cause a fatal intestinal blockage. Do not give degus any plastic toys. Wire exercise wheels are a must; plastic wheels will be destroyed and eaten. Any plastic platforms in a cage should be covered with metal or wood.
-
Unsafe Woods: Not all woods are safe for chewing. Some are toxic.
- Toxic Woods to Avoid: Cedar, redwood, cherry, and any citrus woods (lemon, orange) are toxic. Avoid any wood that has been painted, treated, or stained.
- Safe Woods: Kiln-dried pine, aspen, apple, and willow are all safe and excellent for chewing.
-
"Snak Shak" and Edible Logs: These are made from sawdust and honey/sugar. The sugar is dangerous, and the sawdust can cause blockages if large amounts are ingested.
-
Mineral and Salt Licks: These are unnecessary for a degu on a balanced diet and can lead to an excess intake of minerals.
The Degu-Safe Checklist
When choosing a treat or toy, ask yourself these questions:
- Does it contain sugar? If yes, it is unsafe.
- Is it a fruit? If yes, it is unsafe.
- Is it made of plastic? If yes, it is unsafe.
- Is it a safe type of wood? If you don't know, it's better to be safe and avoid it.
Sticking to a diet of high-quality hay, degu-specific pellets, and safe wood chews is the simplest and most effective way to ensure your degu lives a long, healthy, and diabetes-free life.
