Sexing Your Pet Chinchilla

Correctly identifying the sex of your chinchilla is one of the most important first steps as a new owner. It's crucial for preventing accidental litters and for understanding their social dynamics. While it can seem confusing, there is one clear indicator to look for.

The most reliable way to sex a chinchilla is by looking at the distance and space between the anus and the urethral cone (genital opening). [1]

How to Sex a Chinchilla

To examine your chinchilla, hold them securely or have them stand on a flat surface. Gently lift the base of their tail to get a clear view of the area.

  • Males: A male chinchilla will have a noticeable gap between their urethral cone and their anus. This space is where the testicles are housed, although they are internal and not always visible. [2]
  • Females: A female chinchilla has no gap between their urethral cone and their anus. The two openings are very close together, and there is often a visible slit (the vaginal opening) in the cone itself. [3]

Simple Rule: "If there's a gap, it's a chap!"

This simple rhyme is the easiest way to remember the key difference. The presence of a space between the two openings is the definitive sign of a male.

It is important to note that relying on behavior or size is not an accurate way to determine sex. While females are often slightly larger than males, this is not a reliable indicator. [4] The only sure way is to visually inspect the anogenital area.

If you are ever in doubt, it is always best to consult with an experienced chinchilla breeder or an exotic pet veterinarian for confirmation.
